Timing Chain and timing marks on gen one 500 engine

Hi All,

I finally managed to free my newly installed timing chain on a gen 1 , 500 engine.

I loosened the cam towers. Then removed the rockers. I then bolted the camshaft and removed the camshaft sprocket. Then installed chain on the camshaft sprocket and refitted sprocket/chain to camshaft. Then aligned the left bank(us driver side) , aligned the right bank and achieved a zero position on flywheel. Also see distributor position.

Now everything turns perfect and i have done this 5 times.

Question: Can I use a valve spring tool to simply reinsert the rockers in their original position and start the car. With the timing marks all aligned will it be fine to just install rockers without any further worries. Please see pics and advise.

Thanks
c

Hey not to hijack your thread but I know not your answer. In picture 2, the banjo bolt is connected to what? That unit on my 560 is caked with oil it also appears slotted in front. I have a leak obviously, but cannot isolate the source. Any ideas?

Go ahead and reinstall the rockers. However , before you start it, do a "blind start" using the starter after disconnecting the coil and the fuel pump wires (behind the right rear wheel?) so the engine doesn't fire. Stop if you hear any bad noises. Don't be worried by a little minor noise first up as the oil circulates.

281lxm,
that banjo bolt is the high pressure line to your SLS, it is connected to your SLS pump. likely your Copper sealing washers on either side of the Banjo connector are leaking.

Progress report on 500 sec into 380 sec

Hi all,

finally managed to install rockers. was quite easy even though i never used the correct valve compressor tool. a screwdriver was all i needed.

now, i turned the engine manually 5 times and the 2 camshaft and flywheel lines up prefectly.

I tried swinging the engine , with coil and fuel disconencted. everything sounded ok. then i noticed a puddle of oil under the car.

I found the source of the leak. it is behind the left( driver side for us vehicle) cylinder head. a bolt should have been fitted but this was just an hole, so the oil leaked out. as i was cranking with starter the oil pressure went only to 2 bar, i presume i am loosing pressure through the hole. see foto and advise what he bolt circled in yellow is there for. besides to prevent the oil from leaking what is the purpos eof the bolt. can i simply use another bolt and pug the hole?

the foto below is only for illustration

thanks

Bolt hole

That hole is there for the oil pressure sender pipe on an SL.

The hole if not filled will vent oil at pressure.

progress report but help needed to fire engine

HI All,

replaced the bolt and oil pressure is perfect , 3bar on cranking engine. engine cranks freely and no strange noises from engine.

I then connected the fuel line and coil wire to distributor and treid to start the car. I even put some fuel inot the fuel distributor metering pot. Not start posisble. In some instances it seems like it wants to catch but nothing close to the engine firing. I checked the firing order , it is ok.

The distributor was removed for the timing chain job. I hope i installed it correctly. see pics above . Can someone with experience on making the engine fire please assist.

I would appreciate a step by step troubleshooting guide to start this engine.what are the things i can check in a stepwise manner.

This is my project that involved installing a 500 sel engine into a 380 sec. when i start this engine, i will add the full story including pics and problem areas.

your asisstance to help me get the car to fire will be really apprecaited.
