Found a 300e same color. 500 bucks

The front hood - trunk and doors are in
Great shape.

Has anyone ever swapped the hood trunk or doors just because it might look
Better?

Worth it or dumb ideas?

Also The w124 gas seems like a totally
Different(crappier) ride the a diesel
How's that possible?

Hoods and trunks are an easy swap. Doors, not so much. You've got allot of wiring/vacuum lines going through the door jamb into the door. There is no big "disconnect" plug. Everything is wired to each component ie, seat switch, puddle light, speaker (if so equipped) door switch, lock vacuum actuator. Then you'll have to get the door aligned correctly.

1987 lite blue?

See mine is more of a silver bluish
Color

The donor is lite blue mint condition

The color may be a shade off or my
Paint looks different due to where
The car lived...in Westchester..

Would it be economical to swap my
Hood and trunk and then sell the
300e to someone else??

I'm not into dealing cars but I also
Hate to see cars parted.

My Interior is Perfect and mine rides
ALOT better!
Not as fast but it felt like crap to drive

I got the same crap feeling driving
An 87 560sl?

I don't really need two cars either..
But might be the solution to a paint job

The owner won't just sell me good or trunk ???

Sounds to me like we're talking about 2 different color codes. Find & compare the 2 color codes on the drivers door jamb. If they're the same color, the codes must be the same. No exceptions.

Those late model R107 drive awesome, provided the suspension in good working order and not worn out or neglected.

Yes I don't wanna look like im in a clown car... That's why I'm not into a crappy paint job it can be worse then a faded one..

I Thought swapping would keep the MB integrity.

If you grow up driving in Infiniti and Lexus
A 70-90s Mercedes don't feel "luxurious"

Funny hart to hart episodes they always drive a w123 convertible or wagon

Wonder what they'd drive today

Like the editor of Car and driver said
The luxury is in the Quality

Wish I could agree with you on that one.

To me, a 70s era MB may not be as lavish or technologically equipped but it's a tough bird just like a bush plane. My last W116 did 1.3 million miles when I sold it on the original engine & trans and in running condition. Haven't seen any Japanese get anywhere that yet. I have had 2 W116, and I have deep regrets about 2 weeks after she's gone. I've been on the hunt for the 3rd ever since.

IMO, while Lexus may have tried to copy MB especially with their 1st generation LS, in the end they just ended up with a Japanese Cadillac.

Nice to see that Lexus finally is going for a look of its own after 2 decades of being bland and the "me too" look.

When the 123 wagon showed up on Hart-to-Hart it was a HUGE deal. A Mercedes *station wagon* OMG! I think the wagon population of the Philadelphia Main Line ($$$$$$) exploded.

I had such an inferiority complex commuting between Wynnewood and Paoli on Route 30 (Lancaster Avenue) in the late 80s early 90s in my Plymouth Duster. Benz to the left of me, Benz behind me, Jag ahead of me, Audis and BMWs coming the other way at most traffic lights. You'd see Porsches around Bryn Mawr hospital. A couple of times a week you'd see a Ferrari and a Rolls. I got my first 124 in early 1992.

Things really changed when Lexus showed up. I remember seeing their used car lot full of Benzs. I later found out it was a sales tactic -- they weren't really trade-ins. They had purchased the used Benzs to put on their used lot for obvious reasons.

Back to topic, swapping body panels is risky from a color match standpoint. Paint ages differently on different cars due to sun exposure. When you swap panels the difference can really jump out at you.

Tools were just basic hand tools (rachet, screwdriver) and a floor jack to balance the door (pad it with a towel to prevent scratches, an assistant helps, but this ain't my first trip to the rodeo.) For both you need to take off the trim panels and disconnect everything electrical, then the parts are held on by 4 bolts.

Took me an afternoon to do both.
