Retrofitting headlight adjusters?

The Canadian version of the B-Class has USDOT (United States Departmetn of Transportation) spec headlamps, meaning:
  • low beam cutoff without a significant kick-up to the side of the road (right hand side in LHD countries) - actually the low beam pattern reminds me of my Cibié Z-Beam lights in my 404, though the Cibiés are better
  • deletion of the driver-selectible load settings for the headlamp range, mounted next to the headlamp switch in the EU versions
So my question is: while they are optically different, are the internal structures of the USDOT headlight units identical to those of the ECE version? If so, would it be possible to refit the electric adjusters to the car?

One possible scenario is that the back/inside of the lights (with the exception of the low beam projection lens) is identical between DOT and ECE, and the motor can be attached to the innards of the light unit....and that the Canadian cars are still pre-wired for the adjusters....and that the circuit is not multiplexed....and that the plug for the range adjustment switch is located right behind the switch panel....

Or maybe the motors are already in there, just not enabled.

Maybe I am dreaming here. Maybe not...

Anyway, last weekend with five plus luggage in the car, the low beams were a little too high, but there was no easy way to adjust them. So I thought that retrofitting the range adjustment would be a good idea.

Here's the best part: if it is possible to do, the ECE headlights and range adjustment are both legal in Canada. All 10,239 smart cars sold here had ECE headlights with electric range adjustment, and it sure is useful. The reason our B Classes got the USDOT headlights is that the car was supposed to be sold down there too....it could have had ECE units without any problem at all.

Any thoughts on this? Does anyone with a EU version feel like doing some work on his car to see what may be similar, or different, between it and mine? Or maybe a well-known WIS owner (George) could help figure this out?

Mike some pictures of my UK versions lights. It would appear that the adjustment may well be performed by that white plastic unit which appears to be some form of pneumatic device as it is connected by a tube & not wires. From a look at the headlight units (& having removed mine in the past) there does not appear to be any motors on them. Will check this later in the manual to confirm. I would think this modification would work out to be quite a costly one going on the price of other M/B parts and the amount of work that would need doing.

Just checked no electrical work involved it is pneumatic (vacuum) the 'switch' controls the vacuum (it has tubes connected to it not wires). It would appear from the manual that the rear axle sensor is only used on vehicles fitted with BI-Xenon Headlights.
