Reading the go no go gauge

With the valve job I decided to replace all the rockers as well. I have a lot of those pucks so I can adjust the rockers but I want to make sure I am reading the gauge right. So my question is does the line on the pin have to line up with the guage itself with no deviation? The slot in the pin is cery small and it only takes a few thousandths either way to make theline either too high or too low. It seems like the hydraulic lifters should take up more slack than that. Thanks

As it happened on an earlier subject, I did not do this job, but I did study the adjustment issue a bit, so I will offer my prospective.

I don't know how much slack the lifters are designed to take, but does it really matter? If the adjustment is done correctly, it will end up factory-quality.

The grove in the pin is 1.2mm wide and the top of the gauge has to be within the grove's edges. I attached the factory procedure, I hope it will help.

Stutz, I hope you have better luck than I did with adjusting the thrust pieces. I could not get consistent readings on the gauge.

The manual instructs to rotate the engine with the starter motor for 30 seconds. I assume this is to pump up the hydraulic compensators. I did this numerous times and got different readings with the gauge each time. I finally gave up.

I'll be very interested to hear your experience.
