Checking Oil Level

Super basic question: When do you check the oil level on V8 models? Engine running? Engine off? How long after the engine is shut off?

I've always checked it right after I turned the engine off at operating temp (~80C), but I heard someone talking about the oil not fully draining to the pan. At that point, wouldn't the level be somewhat equal to the cold level?

Dealing with some oil burning smells on deceleration and I think my oil is way overfilled.

At temp Is good, about 5-10 minutes after shut off. And the level should be between the red levels if you have them. A minimum and maximum so stay below the max!

1040 may drain quick, i run 2050 so i give it 10 mins. Just give it a few it wont take long at that temp

Best to check before starting for the day, all other times, like when stopping for gas, I pump the gas then check the oil

Cold engine on a flat surface, or 20 minutes after shut down.

How long do you wait to check the oil level when you do an oil change? The last quart takes me about 20 minutes to add so that I do not overfill.

I think you guys are overthinking this...

Level surface is very important. How much more oil will drain back between 2 and 20 minutes with hot oil? I'm guessing not much. In all my years I've never waited 20 minutes after an oil change to top the oil off. I usually add about 1/2 quart less than I expect it needs, run it for a couple of minutes to check for leaks, then shut it off and clean up. After I've cleaned up I top it off on the dipstick. Done.

Well i must be in another world , and for a start is it engine oil ,or auto transmision oil , we are talking about here?
Engine oil is checked best when stone cold , if not the oil will still be clinging to the inside parts of the engine .
You can have as much as a quart of oil still in bearings and camshaft after stoping the engine, this oil wont get down to the sump in 4 mins or so . So do it how you think is the best way . Topping up oil in warm engine is sure to overfill the maximum quota of oil that should be in there . I have seen this done .It cost a new engine , clutch , and radiator.. That was through over filling the oil levels. Gearbox, the auto type is checked at operating temp .
