There are two sets of buttons on the steering wheel of this vehicle.
On the left hand side of the steering wheel are up and down arrows as well as page forward and page backwards. These buttons control the display in the dash of the car between the Tachometer and the speedometer.

The buttons on the left hand side no longer function.
The buttons on the right hand side which control audio etc do function.

How can I replace / fix these broken buttons?

The 02 has plastic buttons, later model have metallic buttons.. I prefer these.. Wondering if they are interchangeable?

I hope I don't have to remove the steering wheel to get to these and that the airbag doesn't become a confounding issue.

You will have to remove the airbag to get to these buttons. It's not too difficult. There are Torx bolts on the back of the steering wheel holding the airbag in place. As long as you don;t have KeylessGo, you don't even have to disconnect the vehicle battery - just leave the key out of the ignition and there's no worries of airbag deployment.

As for the style of buttons, you would have to replace both the steering wheel and airbag to update them. My advice is to remove the airbag and check the connections to see if something loose. If not, then check eBay for a used replacement set, but the coupe is more rare, so expect higher prices.
