There are many of us that have upgraded our vehicle's sound system either through complete

aftermarket replacements or upgrading the existing Becker and speakers.

Some of the ideas used have been down right imaginative and unique.

Either way, it would be nice if they were all in one place to review.

Also....any helpful tips on removing / installing grills, head units, speakers etc.

@Cwerner The install looks great. I plan on adding 2 rear speaker as well into the side panels.

What size rear speakers did you install? Also how did you run the speaker wires? I plan to run them underneath the center console and split them sideways below the jump seat cushion.

I put in Rockford Fossgate 4" both in front and back. I ran the wiring behind the glove box, then down the passenger door sill all the way back. From there I continued the run to the back drivers side for the left rear under the carpet in the jump seat. REAL SIMPLE!

I saw this post yesterday and agreed that I didn’t like it but this morning opened it up again and i’m already warming up to it. drivability wise it has to feel great in the hands and it looks mighty classy. Give it a few days or months and if you still hate it sell it to someone here. I can’t imagine it’d be hard to get your money back out of.

I just replaced the front speakers in my 72, as one of them was missing part of the cone. I got the cheapest ones I could find on the spur of the moment, scocshe (Walmart house brand, I think) 4", they fit just fine. Apparently I only have one of the four clips that are supposed to retain the grilles....oh well, they still mostly stay in place.

Just so those at the lower end of the audio shopping range will have some guidance :)

(the stereo I installed is an older Dual that I bought at Walmart for just over $20, several years ago)

@Cwerner

I am just looking into installing speakers in the rear panels (since I have OEM rear seat). Did you fashion a mount so the speakers are attached to the body metal and not just the panels? If so, could you share some pictures?. I m hoping to get 5.5s into the space and if all goes well, SEM have the color code for my Creme Beige interior and maybe I can get a can mixed up to paint the grills (i am not sure they will like they did in the "old" days)

Bob in the end how did you mount your speakers? Jut on the panels or to the body?

Bob, I copied my post from another thread (actually, your thread) regarding SEM as follows:

The SEM color code for MB #275 creme beige is #4224. I used it on my seats and the color match was perfect. SEM no longer supplies this color themselves, but they directed me to a company called "Vinyl Pro" when I called. Vinyl Pro has all of the SEM codes and formulas and will reproduce any SEM color in either a can or 12 oz. spray can using SEM products. They made #4224 for me.

As I mentioned, Vinyl Pro mixed the color perfectly and sent my order quickly. Here is the link to their site.

I just completed a rehaul of stereo on my 380SL

Continental Head Unit..reasonable cost of 150 cdn. Has bluetooth and USB connectivity
Audison 5.5 in speakers in rear side panels (painted grills to match interior color of Creme/Beige)
Audison 4 in speakers for front..very shallow so an easy fit
All new speaker wiring (increased gauge)

Sound is great top up or down

so things I found helpful in my radio install for the next guy looking to do this.

1. Metra makes an adaptor that takes the main factory plug to the Becker radio and lets you then crimp or solder to the new wiring versus cutting the factory power and speaker wires. Read the pinout, confirm with a multimeter, as the colors don't necessarily line up with your new radio's wiring colors.
Metra 70-1860 Receiver Wiring Harness

2. Factory radio uses a DIN antenna connector - Check your new radio; mine used an ISO connection so I needed to get one of those

Other than that, it was probably the easiest radio to remove and install I ever did. 2-hour project in total work time.

In the speakers that did not fit file...

Tried a pair of Focal ICU 100s and the magnet hit the brace.

Also tried a pair of Focal Polyglas 100 CVX. REALLY wanted these to fit as they have built in passive crossovers. I was starting to grind on the driver's (US) side and might have been able to get them to fit but the tweeter would not clear the grill or the passenger size air flow valve.

On my '88 the speaker appears to be a high-quality 6 ohm speaker with a decent paper cone and a rubber surround. I might attempt to wire in a pair of tweeters with an external passive crossover, and use the factory drivers as midranges. Have considered using a three-way system with mid bass drivers towards the back of the doors, almost inline with the seat backs.

Hi Everyone,
I just upgraded the stereo in my 560SL. I went very basic with the Continental Bluetooth, and 4” JL Audio dash speakers. Both dropped in with an easy install. It does sound very good for what it is. I was looking for just a touch more of a fuller sound, and started researching powered subs. I wanted something that was hidden, and I did not want the hassle of removing my seats to install. I discovered this little guy from Pioneer. It is a snug fit under the seat on top of the mat. Im going to hook it up and experiment with placement under the parcel shelf as well. Fingers crossed this will add a little fullness, and be what I’m looking for. I’ll report back.
All the best,
N
