HI,
I am thinking of a pano roof.
If the exterior metal needs re-painting, it will need to be stripped of its trim and mouldings etc -
Has anyone on this forum experience of doing this as where I live, I doubt I will find a panel beater with direct experience of this job.
So, has anyone actually stripped a panoramic roof?
THANK YOU,
Darragh.

My paint guy did mine, said it was pretty straight forward. The one at the base of the rear window comes off first this one is screwed on the underside so the pano needs to be off the car first. The long ones running along the glass are then prised off some decent heavy duty clips spaced about 6" apart iirc. Try not to bend anything when levering off, get the lever near each clip first, start at the rear and work forward. The outer guttering is held on by screws under the rubber, some at the top front and also some towards the back.

It's been a while know so it's all a bit vague, I suggest looking at the EPC to see where the retaining screws etc for the side gutters are.

I would also suggest you get a tube of Flowable Silicone to run along the glass joints after re installation. Fantastic stuff just work the small nozzle along the joint, squeeze and it finds it's own way along any ill fitting joint. If any spills out onto the glass, just carefully trim off with a blade when set.

Sounds harder than it is but then the panel beater did mine :smile:smile

thanks again for the essentilal information. you make it sound very do-able.

I don't fully understand the liquid silicone application - is it to keep water out of where the rubber weatherstripping is? Is silicone not detrimental to paint/rust? Is the EPC the Russian parts cat in the stickies?

Thank you
DArragh

It's just that removal of the long glass trim can unsettle the rubber seal and may cause minor leakage. On reflection it may be a better idea to take this into consideration before putting the trim back on and putting a bit of sealant there first.
If you haven't got your own EPC download, anything available will do. This site is good for searching parts, numbers, prices & diagrams. Think it is akin to the stuff on the Star disc. Mercedes-Benz Parts - Shop Genuine Mercedes Parts Online at Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta

Poundy,
I'll annoy you again for re-iterations if/when I acquire one.
Had your body man stripped a pano roof before? I am very cautious in letting someone loose on this hypothetical roof.
Sound,
Darragh.

Not to my knowledge, but I think we tend to underestimate the capabilities of the body repairers especially if they do a lot of insurance work.

They normally have access to online factory vehicle service data, if unsure about anything they login and check it out. The beauty about them doing the whole job is the fact they are insured if anything unforeseen happens.

Took the plunge

I finally got one for my Silver arrow. It came with black trim. Amazing that my dealer was able to order Silver trim for me. Changing the trim was pretty easy so far. Just waiting for the seal lubricant (000 989 03 67) you need to replace the upper moldings.

Parts were still available last year.

The part numbers for the 4 Silver Arrow trim pieces are:
A129 795 33 84
A129 795 38 84
A129 795 37 84
A129 795 33 84

Your dealer needs to order them from germany. It only took about a week.Cost was about $700 USD
