Finished smoking out the back. Going to keep working my way up to the front. Side blinkers are next, then the front. Just ordered the set of black CCFL lights on eBay. Should be here next week to finish off the project. Any questions about the process and I'll be happy to answer.

Hi chris, Those tail lights look really cool and Kudos to the project. I too have a similar project going also. What did you use to smoke the tail lights? (Brand, Spray tin?,and amount required to do the lights) I'd Like to attempt this in the near future. Oh and 1 last thing could you take a close up shot of the tail light itself and post it. Thanks again

Nice with the black car, im going to tint the clear part only of the rear lights with the weather improves !

I went to a local hobby craft store here and picked up some of the transparent black window tint that most have used in other projects. While looking around I also saw a gloss custom transparent black. With the custom transparent black I had better results I thought. The most important key to good results is the prep work before paint. No silicone soaps whatsoever used. I went over the lights with a 600g wet followed by a 800g wet, green scrub pad after the sanding, another soap bath and then dry off with the air compressor. Tack rag, plastic safe adhesion promoter and let dry for an hour. I hit the lights with the transparent black window tint for the first two coats and wasn't liking the results. Went through the whole prep procedure again and started fresh with the other transparent gloss black. Hit it with two coats again and liked the result much better (wish I would have taken before and afters of the two). Went over with three more coats for a total of five, light coats with the transparent gloss black and then with three coats of clear coat. End result is what I wanted. Here in Indiana it's also legal for our 500' minimum. Looks black and blends in with the car but lets enough out to still be legal.

As for the two types here they are. The first is Testors 2949 Transparent Black Window Tint that many use and like. This is the one I applied two coats with and wasn't fully liking the appearance. The second is Testors 1634T Gloss Custom Transparent Black. Its also a tint but I found that after the first and second coats I was liking the appearance and the loss in distance differential meant I could go five coats and still be legal. Now, 1634T is an enamel so you should give it two days to cure completely.

Is this what you're looking for Alex?
Thanks Chris, that is exactly what i was looking for it looks perfect. Seems like the best alternative to purchasing new taillights at a minute fraction of the cost.
Kindly keep us updated with the project especially with the installation of the ccfl halo's (chrome or black?) :D Thanks Again.

yeahhh, that's the good style. looking solid.

Have it in the body shop for the week. Getting a dent repaired from a shopping cart over last weekend. Figured I'd have them touch up some of the light scratches, too. They are backed up and I'm expected to pick it up this Saturday. Will get to the lights probably Mon-Tues depending on the work day. Plus its b-ball time man! Had too many games to watch over last week. Had to shred my bracket though, mine got busted after day two of the second round! These lights look sick though. Also got in some new arrow design side mirror covers I'm going to install and a illuminated sill plate for the interior. Still thinking about doing a black flat mercedes hood badge and going with the four slot mercedes grill. I hope to post some pics of the finished look by Tues-Wed at the latest. I'm going to put together a step-by-step for the side mirror and sill plate, too.

Looks like a quick way to compromise the safety of your vehicle and others.

You wear your sunglasses at night too?

Just smoked my clear parts of the rear lights today, I will take photos tomorrow in the day....

Firewater, looks like you missed the post about it still being legal and visible up to 500'. Were you wearing your sunglasses and forgot to read that? You're not "that guy" in the neighborhood who yells at everyone for driving too fast or playing music too loud are you?
