nope - that's all I have..

I'm pretty sure I read about the ability to swap electronics plates in a StarTek bulletin.

A$300 just for the transmission fluid is insane.

Given the broken B2, you should be able to leverage some savings out of that.
I say the dealer mechanics broke the bolt.
No need for them to remove the B2 bolts so I doubt they broke it. They didn't charge me for fixing that anyway-apart from the bolts themselves- which unlike the trans oil were cheap.

hi there.

further to my previous post, i recieved my GL420cdi back after the warranty work on the rough gearchanges, and the car is completly transformed.
the gearchanges now are so smooth, they are almost unnoticeable.
the part replaced was within the transmission fluid sump according to my service manager.
very impressed with the car now; if this hadn't altered the drive of the car, i was going to trade it.
i hope my experience may help someone else...

It is a know defect and was not caused by mechanics.

Apr, 2011: My 2007 GL450 was around 45K when I noticed unusual high RPM for a couple of instances, I had to pulled the vehicle over and restart the engine to bring it back to normal.

I brought in for a check: First, the dealer told me the transmission fluid is low and needed a flush.

After I paid that, they told me they also discovered some problem with the transmission conduct plate. Well, after spending almost $350, they changed the plate for free, which is still covered under warranty.

It's running OK ever since.

Dealer: Mercedes of Massapaqua (Long Island, NY)

seems... the transmission conduct plate has will be mulfunctioning while performing high RPM... I read many many many identical problems many many times here in benzworld. Probably MB needs to recall for that?

yeah, that was the same as myself...

i told dealer the exact symptoms of the high revs before gearchange, and i was told my GL420 probably required a transmission fliuid flush and replacement fluids; i expressed at that point i would be mucho unhappy if i spent ÂŁ280 and there was no improvement..

symptoms didn't change one jot, unsurprisingly, so the service manager reckoned it was a warranty issue on the plate within the sump, so transmission oil removed again, flushed and replaced while they replaced the part..

personally, i think the service manager suspected it was the plate failure all along, but wanted the 'pound of flesh' ( in this case ÂŁ280 ) for me to replace the transmission fluid at my expense first, rather than getting a free fluid change on warranty whilst they accessed the plate within the sump...

maybe i am being cynical, but it does seem like a well known symptom, and instead of doing a recall, MB are hoping the problem goes unnoticed long enough for the warranty period to of expired.

i must add that the plate was only replaced after i had been mucked about for 4 months by the dealer doing software updates, resets etc, and it was only when i said i would not accept the car back from them unless the problem was no longer there that they replaced the plate in the sump, and that was only after i presented him with all the info i gathered on here and other forums that they problem was dealt with.

as i said in previous post, i was at the end of my tether and was going to trade our GL as this gearbox issue was ruining the experience; since the issue was resolved, the GL is a dream to drive; only thing is i now require my remap re-done, as all the software updates has removed it and i am missing the extra torque and bhp!:D

hopefully, others shall read this thread and be able to confidently confront their MB sevice manager with facts and how to proceed with gearbox issues in the future.

It depends on which transmission is fitted. The 722.6 or the 722.9 but they both have problems, the 722.6 is the electrics plate with input and output turbine speed sensors and the 722.9 is the valve body and control unit, much more expensive to fix.

*Resurection alert!

Well, I'm resurecting this thread.

I've got a '07 GL450 4Matic. Just rolled over 90K kms. The tranny is starting to misbehave. Happened about a month ago - the tranny would not shift out of first. Pulled over, turned the truck off, restarted the truck - no issue. Didn't happen for almost a month. Then last week - same thing - would not come out of first. Heard a loud <CLUNK!> when shifting to park or reverse also. Turned it off, turned it back on - problem gone.

It sounds like this is gonna get worse before it gets better. I called McNaulys Auto in Toronto (MB specialist), and Charlie said its the conductor plate, and Mercedes does not sell the part to any shops, or even to customers. It has to be serviced at the dealer. Can anyone confirm this?

I've scheduled a service appt at the Stealership, but as it is very intermittent at this stage, I fear they wont get anything from the scans/checks. I'm glad I spent the 5K on an extended bumper to bumper warrenty...

Has ANYONE changed the tranny fluid in your car? EVER?
It MIGHT be as simple as that, OR a complete tranny overhaul may be in order. Have you checked with any US sources for anyone other than M-B dealers who mess with the transmission guts?

I've got an 07 GL450 4matic and recently had the tranny not shift down while towing uphill. Tried manually shifting with no affect. Lugged to about 20 mph where I could safely pull over. Shifted to park then back to drive and it pulled away, but now would not upshift. Tried manually shifting again to no avail. Pulled over, switched off and restarted and shifted as expected.

I recently had the fluid flushed and (I think) filter changed at the dealer. It's got 66k miles. Other symptoms are loud clunk sometimes when the car is parked on a hill and going into drive. (I hate that sound! It sounds like I'm going to see my rear axle on the ground!)

We've owned this car now for 3 months. We got rid of our ML430 dues to tranny problems at 183k miles which I figured was a decent life. How can I get ahead of the problem on this one? We tow a single axle trailer with an 18 ft boat intermittently during the summer months.

Do I have the dealer do the SD flash, replace valve body...?

Very helpful.

Truck is dealer serviced and tranny was serviced during "Service D or C" I think it was called, a few thousand KM's ago.

My 450 GL 2007 was driving perfectly - then a lady not looking hit the back of my truck at full speed. The truck was driven to the claims repair location , no problem then before the repairs were to start code appeared po717 tubo input speed sensor - po718 input speed sensor intermite then po717 no signal.

The truck then slowed down to around 20 miles per hour - the insurance company claims department repair shop took the truck in early - they took it to a local body shop to repair the damage while waiting on the parts to arrive, they drove it to the Benz dealership to repair the sensor, Benz warned them that the cost was 175.00 to remove the cover and if they discovered metal shavings it would cost 6800.00 for a rebuilt tranny to repair the damage - The insurance company backed out of the repairs and told me it was my fault for not properly up keep of my truck?

I spoke to the Benz dealership service department, where they took the truck and they told me that it is common for this plate to shift and the electrical component to fall in the solution and short out the transmission, but the insurance company is using this common problem to rid them self of paying the cost to fix tranny, he mentioned he wasn't sure if metal was going to be present, but the insurance company is running for cover due to the fact the truck has 130,000 miles, claiming lack of repair issues- any advice would be helpful in dealing with this situation and Flo's insurance company.

My GL450 transmission just died at 68K miles! Estimate is $6,600. This was my first and last Mercedes. The suspension failed three times prior to this. The last time was out of warranty. I've babied this car and done all the appropriate preventative maintenance. There is just NO reason a transmission should fail at such few miles!!!

More info please?

So sorry to hear that!

What year? Do you know what tranny you have? What were the conditions and how did it fail... slowly over with symptoms leading up to it time or in one catastrophic event.

2007 GL450 transmission problem

Yes. Mine is a 2007 GL450 with 68000 miles. Mercedes Benz of Henderson wants $6010.00 to replace the complete transmission. Two years ago they replaced the valve body at 58000 miles for $2600. After 10,000 miles from the date of valve body replacement, the complete transmission needs replacement because of catastrophic failure. Catastrophic failure is defined as pieces of metals or disc materials ground in the fluid and metastasized in the system. I am looking for cheaper alternative. Thanks.
