I have a 1995 C220. Got the oil changed the other day and it would not turn over at the shop. Had power, etc., but nothing when the key was turned. We messed around and found that they had locked the trunk after replacing a bulb. We unlocked the trunk and it started. Thought it might have something to do with theft deterent?

Two days later it stalled. It starts and runs for a few seconds and kills. I tried several times it is the same thing.

Could these be related? I read that the killing might be the crankshaft position monitor. Maybe the MAF?

It also surges quite a bit at idle. Sometimes almost sending me into an intersection while at a stop.

Hmm. The only time I have run into that is when I lock the door but dont unlock it with a key, for example if I were to pull the lock up manually, then the car doesnt start, and yes that would be a theft deterrent issue, but working as designed. Not sure if that is what the techs did or not. Probably unlocking it at the door would have accomplished the same thing.

The surge is probably MAF related, but get the codes scanned first. Oreillys or autozone will do that for free. If it needs MAF, make sure you get a Bosch(OEM). You can get them through AutohausAZ for cheaper than Mercedes will sell it. The generic brands are crap.

Thanks. I'll have the codes checked on the MAF issue, but still am trying to figure out the starting issue. The car is parked a few blocks from home where it died. It will start and run for a few seconds but that's it.

If it is the crankshaft position sensor, will that show up on the codes also?

If you hear a "click" towards the front of the engine when it stalls, then it could be the EGR valve..

I just unplugged it and the car runs fine! But I will have to replace it anyway.. (1996 C180 Classic)

If u suspect the MAF, disconnect and see if the car drives.. If the problem persists, Crank and cam sensors are the next place to look..

Best thing is to run a diag on the car, that will tell u more specifically what's wrong.. All the best!

starting problem

hi guys!!

our 1995 Mercedes C220 elegance petrol doesn't want to start...

when we insert the key and turn it on all the dash lights come on as per usual and when we further turn the key to finally start it,,,everything just dies on the dash and there is a click like noise in the engine bay... i do not know how to fix it can anyone please advise me on what to do as i will be fixing it myself... it is an automatic :)

thanx all

mercurus yours sounds like a starter issue. check to see if the signal is getting to the starter when you turn the key to the start possition. if there is signal at the solenoid on the starter and nothing is hapening you know you need a starter

My C220 starting problem

My C220 1995 had some problem when i insert the key it start immediately but after few minutes it automatically dies and then immediately if i start again it wont start i have to wait for few minutes and then start then it will go but soon after some miles near intersection if ill stop again after few seconds it die but not all the time some time and i have to wait for few minutes to start it again.

There is a weard voice also coming form the back of cylincer

There is one problem which is center locking button it broke in making unlock state so i cant lock my car from the keys.

Can some one help me in explaning what might be the cause and how can i fix m really in trouble and thi smercerdese gives me hard time

In addition to the above suggestions, you should also check the fuel system, meaning check fuel pressure before, during, and after crank. If it runs then dies it could be a fuel issue. But again, finding a trouble code sure makes the diagnosis a lot easier.
