Hi All,
Any ideas why my front seats won't go forward or back. I can hear a click, like they want to, but they won't. My passenger seat wouldn't go forward, but would go back, and today, I moved my driver seat back to accomodate a friend with long legs, and then I couldn't get it to move forward again. Sucks being 5'4 and trying to stretch my leg as far as possible to drive the car home!
All other seat positions work...just the forward backward position. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I have a 2002 CLK430 Cabrio.
Thanks,
Jen:crybaby2:

When in doubt, search the forums. It sounds like your fuses in the trunk are blown. The cover will tell you which ones are for the seats. They usually don't both go at the same time. The middle motor is on the way out. Get it changed before the seat is stuck all the way forward.

Sometimes I notice that if its extremely hot out(90+), some electronics will malfunction. Example from my experience with this is the seats (rarely), one headlight (occasianal), and cd change (almost always). Once it cools down enough outside everything works perfectly. Hopefully its the same for you and you don't need new seat motors.

Jennifer, has the temp gone down and your problem is fixed ..as silv430 states above? If your seats are blowing fuses, it's an indication that the motor is going (do a forum search and you will find out from the many people with the same issue). Our cars have gremlins that continually crop up...seat motors, MAF, brake light switch, CPS. Saying that, I love the car! Hope the seat issue gets fixed...please post what resolves the issue so others with the same problem can a good indication of what the fix is.

Not very helpful, I must say!

The OP said that only the fore/aft motor did not work, so it cannot be a fuse. Reference to the fuse list shows that seat electric motors share fuses. Fusebox F4, (f6, f7, f8, f9)

It is quite common here to read about failed seat motors, so that is your likely cause, although it also could be the switch.

As you did not add enough information, we do not know if you have the memory feature. This can sometimes get confused and affect seat motor movement. I have had similar temporary glitches like that on my W209.

Have you checked the fuses in the trunck? They share some of the fuses. The #9 is the one that usually goes for the for/aft passenger side.
If the motor is failing at various times (as it sounds like here), it's on the way out. If it gets stuck in one position, take a small hammer and tap the middle motor (the one that always fails) while someone is pressing the forward /aft button. That sometimes will get the motor over the dead spot inside the motor. If you are handy, there are plenty of DIY links and pics. Motor is around $100(+).

Sorry, I haven't checked this post in a few days, but thank you all for your input. At first, I know it wasn't the motor, because the seat would move forward, but stop at a certain point. (not far enough for my short legs to comfortably hit the gas pedal). After confirming there was nothing jammed on the track, I thought I would move the seat back, and then forward again to try to get it past the jam point, and then the seat stuck in the furthest back position. I haven't used my pre-settings on my seat ever, but when I push the presets, the seat does move in all directions, except for forward and back. I will check my fuses, but my gut tells me it's the motor. I have a terrific, honest and reliable mechanic, so I will have him do the fix, as I am not THAT handy.
Thank you all once again for your input. I will post what the problem was as soon as I get around to getting it to my mechanic. In the meantime. I am using a pillow to prop me forward so I can reach the pedal. Sad but true. Sucks being vertically challenged!
