How long since the fuel system was serviced? It sounds like there was water or some dirt in the lines.
Assuming that maintenance was done regularly and everything should be peachy qou, I'd work my way from the gas tank toward the intake, inspecting everything, changing the fuel filter*, and cleaning the injectors first with Techron or similar in 8 gallons of gas, now run a tankful of gas only, then repeat another mini-bottle of Techron injector cleaner in 8 gallons of gas. l'd also check bobbin, plug electrodes and plug cables. Should the home remedies not pinpoint or solve the problem, then, if a scan still does not give a clue, gas pump, injector clean up, and only as last resort gas tank cleanup.
Note that this is based in that the engine turns over well!

(*) You may as well change also the air filter, and check the MAF
