Please bear with me as this is my first attempt to post on the forum.
I have a E240 1999 E Class (W210) and I am getting the 'defective lamp' warning when I turn on ignition. I have checked the lights and have discovered that the 'parking' lights (both left and right) are not working. I tried new bulbs at my local bulb stockists but that did not solve problem.
I now suspect it is a fuse. If it is a fuse can someone please advise where this particular fuse is located (color of fuse etc.)
As I am a 'senior citizen' please forgive this question but I am a novice at this and would greatly appreciate any help or advice anyone might have to offer.
rrRegards,
Tom

Fuse chart

for most 99 models is located with your battery under the rear seat.If not there look in the diy section at the top of the forum in electrical and we posted a fuse chart there.
Do you have automatic day time running lights?Or does the lamp malfunction come on when you step on the brakes?

Hi,
Lamp malfunction comes on as soon as ignition is turned on.
I have looked at the fuse compartment beside the battery under the rear seat. There are 13 fuses. How do I know which fuse could be faulty?
I have listed the 13 fuses below ie their value and location number:

Location 1 20a
'' 2 20a
'' 3 7.5a Qty.2
'' 4 25a +10a
'' 5 25a
'' 6 25a + 20a
'' 8 25a
'' 11 7.5a
'' 17/18 40a
'' 19 40a

Please excuse as I am a total novice.
Thanking you in advance,
Tom

if they are blade fuses, you *should* be able to see that the metal 'stirrup'
is continuous..shaped like a "U". but the only definitive test is to take each
fuse and check for continuity with a D/VOMeter. or, to rely on secondary
observation, e.g. the appliances on that circuit are functioning properly,
therefore one concludes that the fuse is okay (though the converse still
may not be true/conclusive).

Not to belabor the point, but when you first turn on the ignition is your foot on the brake pedal?

Or do you have daytime running lights?

Or if you have a manual transmission, is the car in reverse?

Another culprit might be a bad brake light switch, but that would probably cause other codes as well, like ABS.

Newsflash!!! When I was examining the fuses I push each of them home and now the 'parking lamps' are working. However the 'defective lamp' warning is still there. I have check and double checked that all lights are working including 'licence plate' light.
To answer your question re foot on brake pedal -- answer no
Daytime running lights - no
Automatic Trans.
I have searched on old forums on this problem but cannot seem to find an answer.

Thanks for your comments and for the other members comments.

Thanks for your reply. I have rechecked and rechecked and lo and behold !!!!!!!!!!!one of the front fog lamps is not working . I will pick up a bulb tomorrow and see if that fixes the problem.

Mant thanks to you and all the other replies.
Much Appreciated.
Tom

what is a little amusing is that across the various MB forums, one regularly
comes across a request for help to identify a bulb malfunction message.
in nearly all cases, the person usually writes "...i've checked them all..."

in nearly all cases, we usually find one bulb they didn't. :) lol...glad you
found the ailing bulb.

Put in new bulb this morning . Everything OK now.
Thanks to all you folk

Glad you're all squared away. For future reference there is a quick checklist in the stickies that can help isolate the circuit/area for burned-out bulbs, that can be useful.

Hoist a pint for me later, I loved visiting your country last year but didn't have nearly enough time to spend in Dublin. Kilmainham Gaol was a haunting visit that remains one of the strongest memories of the trip (that and the smell of burning peat...).

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Thanks Greg. Will check the 'Stickies' in future. Glad you enjoyed your holiday here.

Should read:

rear license light (2) :D

Is there a way to permanently shut off that light malfunction? Some people have led exterior lights, xenon, aftermarket, etc ( i personally pulled my city lights because I hate the look).
I hope not - there's already enough cars on the road with headlights, brake-lights, etc. not working and the drivers blissfully unaware of it.
