1. Remove fan shroud.
2.Use groove pliers to lock fan clutch pulley (lock lips of the washer)and unbolt fan clutch.
INSTALLATION NOTE:
Tighten the small fan clutch fasteners to 10 Nm and the large fastener to 45 Nm.

I was contemplating something today. My 420 has a cooling problem. Around town, stop and go driving the engine will get hotter and hotter until it goes over 100C. To this point I thought my problem was my VFC,but as I was thinking about it more I realized the fan clutch shouldn't engage until 100C, meaning that it may not be the cause of the overheating, but a possible solution the problem. Which could mean I have 2 seperate cooling problems.Does this sound like an accurate assumption guys? Something is causing the car too overheat, and my fan clutch should try to compensate for it but if the VFC is burned out, it will not effectively cool the engine. but why is the radiator not cooling the car enough by itself? The temps here have been between 50-65 degrees at the most, so just imagine the problem at much higher summer temps that are on the way.

Well ,as summer coming you should switch to 80 deg thermostat, make cooling harness for Aux. fans, and check radiator -different zones with IR thermometer,
I have the same problem ,one day i was in the traffic and temp rose to 120, I turned off A/C immediately,it went down to 110, but still with cool harness and 80 deg t-stat, i think problem is 14 y.o. old radiator.

whats a new radiator run? installed? I was thinking about the cool harness as well. I am not sure if it will help for my application or not. if the VFC is gone the fan will just freewheel earlier with the cool harness connected.

I had my radiator changed about a month ago, solved my problem of the temp moving up very quickly in stop-start traffic. The old one was totally stuffed.
