Hey, coming up next month when i get the car out i want to put on a new cat back system using 2.5 inch pipes, and i plan to follow the original lines of where the exhaust runs, does anyone have a diagram with the approximate bend angles, and/ or the lengths and other measurments, or if you had a new system put in do you have the stuff written down, any help and tips are awesome! wish me luck guys!

Are the pipes before the cats 2.5"? Really 2.5 is too big even for a 560.
Go no more then 2.25 and try and make the system with as little bends and if possible get the system mandrel bent and choose a decent brand muffler. As for angles and crap you cant really say, the shop will just bend where appropriate you cant really make a system "off car" without a jig and I doubt anyone eill have any for the 126.

3" twin?! No. 2.5" would be fine, most v8s running boost have this size pipe.

I will be doing a single 2.5" Flowmaster system with Dual tailpipes very soon. I'll provide pics. within the next 2 weeks I'd say. most of they system will follow the original lines.

The duals are just too much of a pain for me right now. I got too much on my plate with the body work, Body kit, and sound system.

A single 2.5 is too small, if you have to do a single at all go 3".

I believe you but, isnt the opening on the manifild 2.5? and if it is, isn't that defeating the purpose? Fill me in on the details as to why. I'm all ears. and thanks for the reply. I really am interested in knowing why.

I'm a bit confused (......it happens...).

What kind of setup do you have now?
Is it the North American setup with log-style manifolds and where the exhaust from the driver's side gets routed behind the engine and the exhaust from the right and left side meets up in one pipe going back to the catalytic converter?

If so, postpone the replacement of the exhaust until you've located either the Euro log-style manifolds and downpipes or the Try-y headers.

Replacing the awfully constrictive North American system is a waste of money.

yeah that's the one I got. Fortunately my brother in law runs a meineke muffler shop and the new exhaust will only cost me about 60 bucks. So it's better than the entire stock system for now. I've gone a bit over budget for what I want to do eventually and 800+ dollars for the headers and downpipes alone are a bit too much for me right now. I will eventually do it, it just may have to wait 6 months to a year for it and my exhaust is falling apart as we speak, so, I have little choice right now. With that in mind, will a 3" system be better than a 2.5" with those 2.5" manifold's? I'm sure even though the manifold is 2.5, there would be less restriction down the line by opening up the system to 3" after the manifold so your idea of 3" is a sound one I think. Or, am I wrong? Thoughts?

soo getting back to my situation 2.5 is larger than stock but its a good size that fits under the car, and i think what ill do is cut off the old system and go by that to make the new one, i plan on doing my own stuff, i work at a shop and i have access to a bender soo we'll see how it goes..

when were you planning on doing it? Having mine done in the next week or so. I hope. Gonna run a single system with 2 tailpipes and based on some pictures I have aquired from guys in this forum, It should look pretty tight. So, if you can hold off for a week or so, I can provide many pics when I'm done. We have been planning this system for months.

its gunna be at LEAST a month.. cuz the car is still up for the winter and we are supposed to get about 10 inches of snow on Fri... so im thinking it will be a little longer untill the car comes out. so im deffinatly looking foward to seeing your system!

OK, ill clear this up a bit by recommending what I think would be the best (reasonably speaking) exhaust for a W126 v8.

1. Euro tri-y manifolds, or at least the euro dual log style.
2. Dual pipes, No bigger the 2.5" pipe for the likes of a high output (220kw) 560, but in saying this from experience this is still too large for this engine.
So IDEALY 2.25" (for those wanting one pipe go 3")
3. A proper x-over pipe in the X pattern, let me say ive seen the ones on offer from Magnaflow and I dont like the stamped approach, get the fabricator to use two 120ish degree bends to make the x pipe .
4. The system will be mandrel bent, although this isnt a biggie.
5. Use a quality muffler i.e. Flowmaster 50 series, in the centre where the "kidneys" used to be, then follow with either another muffler or two bullet resonators at around 13" long.
6. For those with emission restraints get 2 high flow cat's preferably on the downpipes, there is appropriate heat sheilding there on the euros, dont know about the US spec cars.
7. Do whatever in terms of the tips but make sure they are away from the bumper being PVC and all.

Good advice!

The US cars will only have heat shielding on the right side. You have to order the appropriate heat shield for the left side from Jonathan, or from your MB dealer.
