Hello fellow members. I am in need of guidance please. Here is the story. My dad has a 1995 e320. It was neglected before given to him. As I write this, the car sits at 204k. The car has a misfiring problem. When I checked the spark plugs, the last two closest to the fire wall had water on the threads. This has lead me to think that perhaps the head is cracked. The car misfire pretty bad unless it is wide open throttle.
Now, I am trying to find a donor engine. I was looking around the junkyards and auto recycling places. I had also come across a few engines on ebay, too. Or noticed that some of the postings suggested that the engine(l6 3.2) is used from 94 up until 97? While other sellers have suggested that only the 94 and 95 share the same engine. So my question is, which year and even model could I extract the motor from? The mechanic will transfer the the component on the car into the new motor, so external parts are not a worried. I just want the long block to mount in and be able to be matted with the car's current components.
Second question is- how much should a used engine go for. I preferably want to stay with an engine the is sub 150k. I have been quoted 500 for a 90k engine. At the same time I am skeptical with a lot of the engines out here, as anyone could produce a misleading mileage on an engine. So what is a good price for an engine?
Also, are these engines hard to extract? I have never done an engine swap before but I am not shy to give it a try. I will not be putting in the engine, but perhaps pulling one out of the junkyard, as taking it out is easier than putting it in correctly.
Thanks to everyone for taking there time and reading this post, as I am in need of some recourse. The mechanic is going to charge me 400 to put in the new engine. I honestly have about only 1000 to spend. I would like to get it running good for my dad for Christmas. I live in fresno, California if that matters. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Before blaming the engine, be aware that the ENTIRE ignition system (3 coils, 3 coil to plug boots, 3 plug wires, 6 spark plugs) is deemed disposable and needs to be replaced about every 125K miles and spark plugs every 25K miles.

And the ONLY acceptable plug is Bosch F8DC4. No exceptions

And if eco junk wiring is at play, all bets are off.

Thank you. I will look into that as well since mentioned. I have since changed out the spark plugs. Perhaps I should try new wires and could too. I figured, if it's not the cause, I could always use it for the new engine. Thanks. I will keep you guys updated.

I would keep on with this engine, as it very robust and proven to be a good configuration . Just purchase a pair of new leads to check it out...Check the length you need before you buy them ..Then you will know if engine is ok or not ..Or get a tester to put on the plug and the other part in the plug lead ,spin it over you will see if its sparking.or not.. If you have the m104 engine it will have more than one coil on it ,this may be your problem..I think they go down in pairs ,like one not firing and at the same time another one will follow.

Thank you. I will definitely try that. As I am also wanting to absolutely make sure it is or is not the engine. My friend is brining a test kit for the gasket. I am unsure of what it is called, but it is supposed to find any trace of carbon fume in the radiator.

Has there been any sort of leak down test done on the motor?
At this point, not yet. I am hoping to possibly do it myself somehow. Maybe a kit from the auto part store or have a local mechanic perform the task. My friend is possibly going to come over today to test the head gasket for any leaks. I am unsure of the credibility of the test kit that he has. If anything we will enjoy a beer together.

Absolutely. Thanks. I will make sure I do.
At this point I don't have a lab top(yet) so it makes it somewhat slow to do it. But I'll make sure to get to it.

Quick update: I ordered new coils for the vehicle. Unexpected work hours have prevented me from performing an at-home leak test. But I have found a few wrecked e340s about 40 min from my place. So either way, I'm trying to get it running by Christmas.
