At 90k mileage my idle revs became increasingly erratic [ 500 to 1500 and back again ]. I cleaned a load of gunk from the throttle body with a carb cleaner spray without dismantling anything but the air intake. Now a lot steadier but not perfect. Will this fix itself as the ECU relearns how to live right or is more extensive cleaning required?

If it only starts to hunt , at low idle 500 - 800 Rpm . If it runs fine at 1500 Rpm or higher .

I would say its the injector O-rings / seals , remove the cover over the fuel rail , with the engine running ( at it lowest rpm ) spray carb. cleaner at each injectors base .

When the engine rpm increase with one spray shot , thats the worst one . The seals are cheap - plus a few hour of work the replace them all .

I had this problem on my E 320 , now its fine.

UBOATER is right about the injector seals but if that's not it, try checking and cleaning the Idle Control Valve. Do a search on ICV and you'll find the procedure on how to remove and clean...
I think this may be the link:
